It's so much better than it needed to be; one watches it under the impression that it is just another buddy-cop comedy, and yet each obvious, predictable scene unfolds in subtly perverse ways that takes "low-to-middle brow run-of-the-mill Hollywood comedy" into comic artistry. The laughs could have been cheap; instead, they're priceless.
